Store speed test
Type your store's address. We open your home page, a category, a product and the cart on a simulated phone, and tell you how many seconds a shopper waits before each one shows what they came for. Free, no email needed. It takes about three minutes.
We keep the store address you type and the result. Nothing about you: no email, no sign-up.
What it measures
We follow the path a shopper takes on the way to buying: your home page, one category page linked from it, one product page, and the cart if a new visitor can open it. Each page is opened three times on a simulated mid-range phone over a slow 4G connection, which is how Google tests for mobile. One run can be off, so we judge each page on the middle result.
The number that matters most is how many seconds pass before the main content shows up, usually the big photo or the headline. Google wants that to be 2.5 seconds or less. We also tell you when the first thing appears, whether the page stays busy and ignores taps after it shows, and whether things jump around while it loads (that's when a shopper goes to tap a button and hits something else).
If Google has enough data from real visitors to your store, we show that too, and label it so you know which numbers are measured on real phones.
How to read the result
Each page gets a speed score from 0 to 100 and one of three labels.
- Fast
- 90 or more, Google's good band. Nothing to fix.
- Could be faster
- 50 to 89. Not badly slow, but shoppers wait longer than they should.
- Slow
- Under 50, Google's poor band. Shoppers feel the wait.
What speed is worth
Shoppers on phones don't wait. If a page is slow they go back to Google and click the next store, and Google itself shows faster stores higher in its results.
There's a study Deloitte ran for Google that put a number on it. They followed the mobile sites of 37 European and American brands over 30 million visits. When a site got 0.1 seconds faster on four speed measures, across every page of the shopping journey, retail sites saw conversion rates go up 8.4% on average, and shoppers spent 9.2% more. You can read the study on web.dev.
That's an average across large brands, not a promise for your store. After a test, the box under the result turns it into a rough monthly figure for your store. The formula is shown, and the percentage is yours to change.
Questions people ask
Why is my store slow on a phone?
Usually a few things at once. Big photos that were never resized for phones. Apps or plugins that each load their own code on every page. A theme that loads everything up front, and a server that takes its time to answer. Old store software makes the last two worse. This test tells you how long shoppers wait. Our free store review tells you why.
Why is my Shopify store slow?
Shopify runs the servers, so a slow Shopify store nearly always comes down to the theme, the apps and the images. Apps you removed can leave code behind in the theme, and every installed app can add its own scripts to every page.
Why is my WooCommerce store so slow?
Most often it's too many plugins, no page caching (keeping ready-made copies of pages so the server doesn't rebuild them for every visitor), a cheap shared server, large images, and old versions of PHP or WooCommerce. Our free version checker shows that last one in a few seconds.
Why is my result different from Google PageSpeed Insights?
We run the same test PageSpeed Insights runs (Google calls it Lighthouse), on a simulated mid-range phone over a slow 4G connection, but from our own server. One run can differ a lot from the next, so we test each page three times and show the middle result. PageSpeed Insights shows a single run. The link under every result runs Google's own test on the same page.
What does "main content" mean?
The biggest thing a shopper sees when the page opens, usually the main photo or the headline. Google's name for the time until it shows is Largest Contentful Paint, and Google wants it under 2.5 seconds.
Do you keep anything?
The store address and the result, so the same store tested again within a few hours gets the same answer straight away. Nothing about you: no name, no email, no sign-up. The sales figure you type into the optional box stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
Want to know why it's slow?
The test tells you how long shoppers wait. Our free store review tells you why. We make a copy of your store and go through it from the inside: the theme, every plugin or module, the images, the server and the store software. Within 3 business days you get a written list of what slows each page down, what to fix first, and a fixed price for the work. No charge, no obligation.
