PrestaShop Speed Optimization 2026: Step-by-Step Guide to Faster Load Times & More Sales
A step-by-step PrestaShop speed guide, in the order we actually do it: measure, cache, images, modules and database, hosting, theme.
If your PrestaShop store still takes four to six seconds to open, you are losing customers you will never hear from. Shoppers on phones leave, and Google ranks slow pages lower. The good news, and we mean it, is that PrestaShop is one of the easiest platforms to make fast, because you control everything.
This is the order we work in. If you just want the short list of what matters most, read the shorter version instead.
Step 1: Measure before you touch anything
Run the home page, a category page and a product page through Google PageSpeed Insights on the mobile setting. Use GTmetrix or WebPageTest if you want a waterfall to look at. Test from where your buyers are, not from where you are.
Aim for a mobile score of 85 or better and the main content loading in under 2.5 seconds. Write down where you start, or you will not know what helped.
Step 2: Caching
In the back office, go to Advanced Parameters → Performance. Switch on CCC for CSS, JavaScript and HTML, and Smarty caching. If the hosting offers APCu or Redis, choose it over the file system. Clear the cache afterwards.
On a store that had none of this, expect one to three seconds back straight away.
Step 3: Images
Photos are usually half to two-thirds of the page. Convert to WebP with a module or at the server, compress before uploading, and confirm lazy loading is on. Regenerate thumbnails if the sizes were wrong.
Step 4: Modules and database
Every module adds stylesheets, scripts and queries. Uninstall the ones you do not use, not just disable. Optimise the database tables, clear the logs and guest carts, and trim product combinations if you have thousands you never sell.
Step 5: Hosting
Shared hosting is a hard ceiling. A VPS or dedicated server with PHP 8.2 or newer, OPcache on, and Redis or Memcached is the baseline. Put Cloudflare or a similar CDN in front so buyers abroad are not waiting on your server's location. Our PrestaShop page describes the setup we use.
Step 6: Theme and front-end code
The theme matters more than most owners think. Use a lean one or a child theme, remove unused fonts and scripts, and keep the CSS and JavaScript combined and minified. A heavy theme is a permanent handicap no amount of caching removes.
Step 7: The advanced bits
Once the basics are done: inline the critical CSS, preload the key resources, and look at query caching for the heaviest pages. This is where the last second goes.
What the result looks like
One example rather than a range: a Slovenian store we upgraded went from a Google mobile score of 44 to 99, and its main content from 13.3 seconds to 1.9. The numbers are on our results page.
When you would rather hand it over
If you have done the basics and the store is still slow, or you would simply rather not spend your weekends in the performance tab, this is what we do. Store Rescue is a fixed price for thirty working days with the speed result guaranteed, and our managed engineering keeps it that way afterwards. Book a call and put the store's address in the form.
